A European humanitarian aid group said on Thursday that about 50 migrants died after their small boat deflated during an attempt to cross the central Mediterranean Sea. A ship belonging to the charity, SOS Mediterranee, spotted the deflating rubber dinghy on Wednesday, in international waters under the Libyan rescue jurisdiction. The survivors told the charity that they had been adrift for four days, since the engine on their dinghy broke. Some 50 other people were with them when they departed from the Libyan port of Zawiya, they told the rescuers, including two infants and four women. Valeria Taurino, the director general of SOS Mediterranee, said the situation on board was “disastrous.”

China News Service | China News Service | Getty ImagesBEIJING — China revealed this week it aims to spend more than a billion dollars to bolster manufacturing and domestic tech in a bid to remain globally competitive, while divulging little new support for the struggling real estate market. Industrial support clearly ranked first on Beijing's priority list for the year ahead, according to three major plans released this week as part of China's annual parliamentary meetings. Chinese authorities in 2020 intensified a crackdown on real estate developers' high reliance on debt for growth. Within that second priority, the finance ministry said it would allocate 31.3 billion yuan for improving vocational education. The government work report presented by Premier Li Qiang gave real estate a similar level of prominence.

These are the big deflationary factors"A lot of factors have come together to push goods prices down," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics. In addition to normalizing supply-demand dynamics, a historically strong U.S. dollar relative to other global currencies has also helped rein in goods prices, Zandi said. Falling energy prices have also put downward pressure on goods prices, due to lower transportation and energy-intensive manufacturing costs, economists said. Lower energy prices also put downward pressure on the transportation of food to store shelves. Consumers get more for roughly the same amount of money, which shows up as a price decline in the CPI data.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A South Korean court on Monday acquitted Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong of financial crimes involving a contentious merger between Samsung affiliates in 2015 that tightened his grip over South Korea’s biggest company. The court said the prosecution failed to sufficiently prove the merger between Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries was unlawfully conducted with an aim to strengthen Lee’s control over Samsung Electronics. Lee had denied wrongdoing in the current case, describing the 2015 merger as “normal business activity.”Lee, 56, did not answer questions from reporters as left the court. Lee Jae-yong served 18 months in prison after being convicted in 2017 over separate bribery charges related to the 2015 deal. Some shareholders had opposed the 2015 merger, saying that it unfairly benefited the Lee family while hurting minority shareholders.

When Nikki Haley conceded her deflating third-place defeat in the Iowa caucuses this month, the first person she thanked was nearly 8,000 miles away. “I want to say to my husband, who is deployed, who I know may or may not be watching this right now — Michael, I love you,” she said, standing in front of a row of American flags. “What keeps me going at night is that we sleep under the same stars.”It was an unusually personal and almost saccharine note for a politician known for her tough exterior. But it was hardly out of place. Even in his absence, Maj. Michael Haley, a National Guardsman serving a voluntary, yearlong deployment in Africa, has played an outsize role in his wife’s increasingly lonely attempt to snatch the Republican nomination from former President Donald J. Trump.

Opinion | Is the Trump Threat Too Serious for Humor?

To the Editor:Re “I’ve Told My Last Trump Joke,” by David Kamp (Opinion guest essay, Jan. 24):I encourage Mr. Kamp to keep telling Donald Trump jokes. Mr. Trump is a serious threat to American democracy and the institutions of a pluralistic society, so I understand Mr. Kamp’s fear that jokes make the danger seem trivial. However, alongside every joke aimed at deflating Mr. Trump stands the fact that 74 million American citizens voted for him in 2020, and even more may vote for him and autocracy in 2024. Certainly, Mr. Kamp needs better jokes than the sophomoric epithet “short-fingered vulgarian,” which merely places the comic on the same immature level as Mr. Trump. But jokes that remind us of his disdain for democracy, pluralism and decency can be a powerful weapon against Mr. Trump’s campaign.

CNN —Hollywood films of diverse genres have one point in common — they’re all about the most important person in the universe. That most important person could be an amnesiac assassin fighting a mysterious government conspiracy, or some guy (or girl) seeking true love. They are the main character; everyone else is secondary. The goal of life is success and self-actualization as the main character of your own dream. He’s the most important person in a whole range of familiar narratives, all crammed haphazardly into a 90-minute run time.

The price of durable goods is deflating, though many Americans may not feel the impact. AdvertisementEven though inflation is still higher than ideal, many things are actually getting cheaper. The prices of durable goods, meaning long-lasting items such as used cars or appliances, have fallen year-over-year for each of the last five months. That decreased demand has helped push down goods prices. AdvertisementTo be sure, most items Americans are purchasing on the daily are still inflating.

Berkshire Hathaway Chairman Warren Buffett walks through the exhibit hall as shareholders gather to hear from the billionaire investor at Berkshire Hathaway Inc's annual shareholder meeting in Omaha, Nebraska, U.S., May 4, 2019. Berkshire owns 80% of Pilot, having paid the Haslams $2.76 billion for a 38.6% stake in 2017 and $8.2 billion for another 41.4% in January. The Haslams sued Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire in October, accusing it of seeking a "windfall" by adopting "pushdown" accounting for Pilot. Berkshire countersued on Nov. 28, saying Jimmy Haslam tried to bribe Pilot executives with millions of dollars to inflate earnings in 2023 at the expense of future years. According to court papers, the Haslams believe the 20% Pilot stake was worth $3.2 billion before Berkshire's accounting change, an amount Berkshire disputes.

Pending home sales, a measure of signed contracts on existing homes, dropped 1.5% in October from September. They hit the lowest level since the National Association of Realtors began tracking this metric in 2001, meaning it's even worse than readings during the financial crisis over a decade ago. Because the index measures signed contracts, it is the most recent indicator of housing demand. The realtors continue to say it's not just high rates but still very low supply of homes for sale that is deflating activity. The Realtors noted that sales of homes priced above $750,000 have been increasing simply because there is more supply on the high end of the market.

Global growth to slow but avoid a hard landing -OECD

Growth in advanced economies that make up the OECD's 38 members was seen headed for a soft landing, with the United States holding up better than expected so far. "Our central projections are for a soft landing, but that cannot be taken for granted," OECD chief economist Clare Lombardelli told a news conference. "Monetary policy needs careful calibration to bring inflation to targets while minimising the impact on growth. The OECD forecast U.S. growth would slow from 2.4% this year to 1.5% next year, revising up its estimates from September when it predicted U.S. growth of 2.2% in 2023 and 1.3% in 2024. Its growth was seen easing from 5.2% this year to 4.7% in 2024 - both marginally higher than expected in September - before slowing further in 2025 to 4.2%, the OECD forecast.

The country is also almost certainly heading towards a recession — if it's not already in one — and the housing market is partly to blame, economists say. But immigration is just one of many factors at play — Canada's housing crisis far preceded the rise in immigration. Stillo believes Canada's housing bubble has been slowly "deflating" for the last 18 months, despite an upswing in prices earlier this year. But there isn't consensus on if and when Canada's housing bubble will burst — or even if there is a bubble. While housing prices have flattened recently as demand softens, he says they show no sign of significantly declining.

That's why parenting researcher and author Jennifer Breheny Wallace teaches her own three children a very simple concept. Chesebro was the third of 19 codefendants in the Georgia case to make a deal, a monumental legal and personal blow to Trump, who highly prizes loyalty among his associates. Another former Trump lawyer, Sidney Powell, entered into a plea deal Thursday, following a September deal by a lesser-known bail bondsman, Scott Hall. While other defendants – especially Trump – have pushed for later trial dates, Chesebro insisted on his right to a speedy trial. Jury selection for his case started Friday, and Chesebro entered into the plea deal hours after potential jurors filed into the courthouse.
